boat dies when open throttle 78 merc 85hp

I have a 78 merc 850. When the boat is cold and I first open it up it goes for about 5 sec. then it suddenlys wants to die and I have to bring the throttle half way so it doesn't die. I got a diagnostic and they said it was the lower crank sill has a hole in it. Does this sound correct? They said just do a rebuild, but that cost too much($2000) Sometimes I press on the bulb and open up the engine and it goes for a while then dies back down then goes again??? confused?? It doesn't go all the time when I pump the bulb and open it up. I rebuilt the fuel diaphram and the carbs? So what can I do? Please help me?

check your floats and make sure it's not flooding<br />first. when you rebuilt, did you install new floats?<br />tap on side of fill bowl can sometimes un-stick.<br />just a guess....<br />M.Y.
