Not a fun way to start the weekend!

A good reason why some preseason maintenance is a necessity!

Glad the guy got out of it alive.

OK what am I missing here ??.

The engine compartment blew up and then the cabin caught fire also.

The gas smell had to be so great that you couldn't help but smell it.

Leaky gas tank maybe ??.

I'm glad he didn't get hurt from that ordeal.

Well I would think along the same lines as you Summer Fun, the gas could be anything but in my experience its probably a carb issue that some simple preventative maintenance would have prevented, gas fumes then move up through the bilge into the forward cabin, add spark and blamo! People have to use their heads here a boat is intended to keep water out but that same ideology keeps gas fumes in! a boat is a bowl, holding gas fumes and making for a pretty good little bomb, also the very nature of materials used in building a boat is not in any way designed to prevent or resist from catching fire! Think about it, Fiberglass-very flammable, wood-very flammable, Vinyl and foam-very Flammable, gas fumes-Explosive!!

I hope that this situation is used as a learning experience for others to take the precautions necessary to be safe, Thankfully the operator made it out with only his pride injured.

Guys if you smell gas STOP!!! have your carb checked out first, carbs have the most little things that can go wrong gaskets, floats, bowls or stuck needles any of which can cause a fuel leak. Then go down the line fuel lines, fuel pump fuel lines gas tank, then the filler neck. Sad to see a decent boat go up in flames but I am willing to bet anyone with 5 years boating experience has seen a boat go up in flames and that's sad.

Ouch!!

Glad it was only the boat, bad way to start the long weekend, fortunately the owner was not injured, I lost a good friend when I lived in Hawaii because of an engine explosion in his charter fishing boat, the blower failed and fumes accumulated, hit the key and it went up like a box of dynamite..

I'm gonna say this was just negligence on the owners part. If you've boated a month you know how to deal with your I/O and besides just prepping the boat for the season you'd have rear lid open at least to check the oil. The first owner of my sig boat didn't buy the Fireboy option but it has the little removable plastic thing on the back of the sport seating you are supposed to stick the extinguisher in to put out a fire so you don't feed air to the fire by opening the lid. Seeing an explosion like that one makes me think ther is no way to effectively handle a fire without the Fireboy.
