I got a call from my marina that my boat was full of water. There was about 5 inches of water in my boat. Got all the water out. Started it up, took it out of the water. Inspected the back end and found a hole in the bottom rubber tube/boot. I was told that the boot/tube is for the exhaust. And my buddy said he thought that he heard that if that has a hole in it that it wouldnt cause it to leak, only to be louder? Which doesnt make sense to me. Any thoughts? It is leaking around driveshaft area. Driveshaft boot looks new.

There is a exhaust boot for the exhaust. if it has a whole in it. when the boat is running, it will leak seawater into the bilge. if its leaking all the time, it can be the boots from the drive to the transom.

Your friend is right, the exhaust bellows will not leak back into the boat. The drive bellows will. You cannot see all that much of the drive bellows so don't just do a visual, you need to take the drive off and see if there is water in that cavity. Water there can ruin driveshaft u-joints and any other bearings and such in the drive.

Yeah, you can pretty much take the exhaust bellows completely off and it won't leak into the boat........unless there is a poor seal at the transom joint to "Y" pipe inside the boat as well.

Ayuh,.... I'm sorry,... You're mistaken...
If the Exhaust Bellows is Totally Gone,....
There'll be No water entering the bilge....

Ayuh,.....

While that Bellows might look new where you can see it,...
Your description says it's Leaking like a Sieve.....

My Guess is,.. You probably should break down,+ replace ALL of the rubber parts in the transom assembley, as well as the lower shift cable....
It any part is Gone,... The rest are Not very far behind....
