Boat goes forward when I put the throttle in reverse

Just bought a 1990 glastron with a mercruiser 3.0. Seemed fine when I got it everything ran fine and sounded good. When I took it out to the water for the first time trying to put it in reverse it was the same as just giving it gas to go forward. There are two cables that seem to be disconnected from the throttle. Not sure what the issues could be here and if I need to take it in to get work. Any help is appreciated.

The throttle cable and shift cable are both connected. But there's two little posts that have wires that seem to have hooked onto the throttle but are no longer on there. Also not sure if this helps but the shift arm was cranked way to tight when I went to look at it causing the throttle to be really stiff. I loosened it slightly and the throttle feels fine now, but haven't checked if the boat shifts into reverse now. I can try to get pictures later of where the wires are unhooked. I guess my question is anything electrical required for a boat to shift in reverse? Or would it be issues with the control cables, gear box, or something else.

Photos? How was the boat when you took it for the test run? Was it working properly then?

Shifting is all mechanical. The only thing electrical is the shift cutout switch, which momentarily cuts the ignition while the drive comes out of gear.

:welcome: to iBoats . . .

Sounds like the previous owner had his/her way with the shifter/control. Sounds like it is all bassackwards :D

My suggestions are to either do some research into how the shifter/throttle linkages work (you might find some YouTube videos that help). . . or take the boat into a reputable shop for a fix-it.
