boat hull question

good morning- i have 2 posts running right now- one talks of my problems with dolphinite bottom paint, the other my johnson 150hp. the biggest problem is loss of power- down to 4000 rpms and 31mph.

got another opinion last night- although my engine has some issues (lower compression on one cylinder and a check engine alarm that randomly sounds), that it may not be the real problem. since my bottom paint didn't work, i put it up on a lift and spend 8 hrs power washing it. i knocked off the scum and barnacles. but the "feet" of the barnacles still remain. no big build-up, but my hull is far from smooth. would probably cut my hand if i rubbed it along the underside.

the new opinion is that this is most definately dropping the power by what i'm experiencing. alothough i can't accurately describe how smooth/rough my hull is, does anyone agree here? how much will a rough hull cut on your rpms/speed? will it affect rpms, or just speed?

i plan on pulling the boat and sanding the hull back to a smooth finish, eliminating that problem all together. but wanted to get opinions. i'm optimistic that my engine may not be so bad...

Re: boat hull question

I can't see how a rough hull would affect RPMs, but it would definitely affect speed. How much it affects speed depends on exactly how bad it is. From your description (only the "feet" of the barnacles remain) I don't think it would be slowing down the boat that much.

Have you ran it since you powerwashed the hull? Notice any difference in speed?

Re: boat hull question

that's the weird thing. boat used to run at 5000rpm and 42mph. sat unused for 5 weeks. then ran at 4000rpm and 26mph. powerwashed hull. then ran at 4000rpm and 31mph. i think the increase in speed but not rpm shows i have another problem. but i'm still optimisitc the hull may be the problem???

Re: boat hull question

i would check out gas, or carbs gummed up,, get you some seafoam, or gumout, see if that helps at all.

Re: boat hull question

i "decarbed" with some generic marine decarb product. followed directions- run engine at fast idle, spray can into carb throats, let sit for 15 min, run like crazy. any chance another product may help? or am headed for at least a rebuild?

I would check over the fuel system real well, check for water, closed vents, gummed up linkage, fule addatives,, you know that such of thing, elemintaed fule problems then go from there,.. check you engine oil, see if it seems to have gas oor water in it...

Re: boat hull question

I'll bet if it sat for 5 weeks with OLD fuel in it, you've got more varnish than gasoline in the tank!

That decarb is for removing carbon buildup in the cylinders- won't help at all for aged fuel.

Try draining tank of old fuel, refilling half way with fresh gas, pour a couple of cans of carb cleaner into the tank, then run it HARD using up the partial tankfull. Bet you get your RPM's back!

Hi, Mattttt.

I was, and you will be, amazed at how much hull drag can load a boat down.

Whether you have an engine problem or not, you need to clean the bottom. Scrape her smooth, then use an oxalic acid product to dissolve the last residue of calcium deposits.I would expect you to get your 1,000rpm and 11mph back with that alone.

Suggestions and advice about your engine belongs on your engine question thread, not here.

Good luck. :)

Re: boat hull question

jb- thank you for your optimistic advice. the boat is getting hauled next weekend, and i'll be cleaning/sanding next week. once finished, i'll give her a run and go from there.
