Motor hydrolocked on July 4th. I suspected the flywheel had some missing teeth, and sure enough that's what happened. I already knew the flapper valves were disintegrated, which was most of the reason why water got sucked into the exhaust.

I implore all you guys to check the condition of the valves. It's such an easy thing to do and may save you the headache I just went through, not to mention the expense.

On my Volvo 5.0 you check the flappers simply by pulling out the metal downpipe off the riser, after loosening the hose clamps. They're right below the elbow.
