Moved this out of Boating Cartoons, why it was there is anyone's guess.

Don't feel bad, AD. Maybe it should have been left in the cartoons. I'm

Yeoldescowl , Just letting you know that here is your new thread location down in the Mercruiser sub-forum.

It may help us out to know what year and serial number your stern drive is and what shift cable part number you bought to try...The more info you can provide of how you installed the cable, what service manual and section you used, the better we can at least try to help you out.

First thought is maybe you bought the wrong size/part number shift cable and also maybe using an incorrect service manual as sort of possibly indicated by using some of the info of the following link that also mentions 1 3/8 inch shift cables...,https://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...cable-problems

There were a few different types/sizes of cables over the years and also how they where installed into the bell housing such as threaded into the front side or back side of the bell housing along with some bell-housing drilling may of been needed.

Mercruiser also had one type of cable that may of needed to be cut to size sort of speak and you'd need to (or maybe still are??) following that section of the service manual.

Did the new shift cable come with installation directions? Some do some didn't.

To start out with some of the above info, Here's just another example of the cable designs for installation locations including one of the reviewers.
Sierra 18-2158 Shift Cable Assembly for Mercruiser

Sierra 18-2158 Shift Cable Assembly has an old style stranded core wire with soldered tip. For Mercruiser #1 drives s/n 1562900-6225576 for forward installation into bell housing.

The shift cable installation review by kenneth t. on 28 Sep 2019: The shift cable was not the correct one, there are 2 types one a older style that threads in from the back side of the gimbal housing and one that is fed in and easily threaded one, I was sent the one that threads in from the back, I finally got it after 3 hours, I made it work because I wanted to go boating and that was quicker than ordering another one....Read More
