I am looking for an open design boat (without benches) similar to the picture below. Does this type of layout have a particular name for it so I can do searches for it when looking for one to buy?

I would call then aluminum Vee or modified Jon Boats. Only thing that is common, is they are all aluminum hull. There are various different variations and many manufactures call them other things such as

A jon boat has a square bow, but lots of people call small boats a "jon." I think "skiff" is the most correct term for an open boat that size (square bow would be a scow, which can be a type of skiff).

But if you are searching, be flexible since people call them anything these days. Even "john."

Thanks for that HC. It always grates when any small boat is called a jon or john boat.

7lazy77 - Those are also often called utility boats and tiller steered. Here is the utility page from Starcraft. If you click on the models, the layouts look much like the pic you posted. Starcraft Utility Boats Boats | Starcraft Marine Some have benches, some don't.

"Open fishing boat"

Look at the Alumacraft "classic 16". or " 16 LTD".
Or a Lund "Rebel".

Can't afford a new one, but is there an older models out there with the same layout, but in a 17-18' length. The more I look at the 16', I don't think it is going to work very well for me, wife & 3 kids (10,8,8) & I don't see much out there in the longer version.

Since you're going to need seating for 5 I think a bench boat would actually be better suited to your needs.

while length is an important factor, when it comes to safe capacity, design is more important than length. Given the age of your children, you want something wide and stable. Look at a 16' carolina skiff, 17' whaler, 16' starcraft alum bowrider.
