How are boat lengths measured these days in the 20 to 30 foot cruiser catagory?
Were looking to move up to a newer, bigger boat. You know, two footitis. We presently have a '89 Bayliner 2155 Ciera Sunbridge with a listed gunwale length of 21"2" and a centerline length of 20'8". This boat has a bolt-on swim platform and one of those extended anchor pulpits.

I'm aware that the term Overall Length came into play in the last few years; how does that compare with the earlier scheme? What year did that change take place and did most of the major boat builders use it? For example we've seen a listing of a 1998 Bayliner 2355 Sunbridge with a stated length of 23 ft. and a 2000 Bayliner 2455 Sunbridge with a stated length of 24 ft. Both of these have integrated swim platforms and short anchor roller brackets. Are these boats basically the same length, from transom to bow? Is the length of the 1998 boat based the gunwale or centerline length of earlier boats? Thanks.

Re: boat length measurements

It is all in the marketing game. There are no standards on length that I know of. Take a 19' hull centerline one manufacturer will call it a 19 - the next will measure it differently as you mention and call it a 196 - the next will include the molding around the engine bracket and call it a 21. The important thing is not the number but the usable space for the typ of boating that you and your family are into.

My boat is a flat 23' but if you include the bow pulpit and the motors it is a 28' - and it looks like it should be a 32'.
