Boat Lift Batteries

I have a Hewitt boat lift with a 24V direct drive. The installers used 2 12V dual purpose batteries. In addition I have a solar panel charging kit from Hewitt. In five years I have had to replace the batteries 3 time in spite of infrequent use. Is it possible that I am using the wrong type of battery--that is, should I be using a single purpose battery? If so, should I be using a cranking battery or a deep cycle battery? Thanks.

The solar charger is probably not adequate. It takes a big array of solar panels to properly charge one battery and you have two
