Boat muff placement

Your help is appreciated. I have a 1995 Force 120HP. Each time I go to put the muffs on, I forget which side of the motor the water hose needs to be on. I've screwed up in the past by arranging the muffs where the water hose input is on the wrong side of the motor from the water pump intake...which results in me not having any water circulating. I quickly notice and flip the muffs and restart her. I've searched everywhere in my Seloc manual and can't find which how I'm supposed to put them. Maybe I'm crazy, but I assume my water pump is on one side of the motor, and since the muffs only have one water hose feeding them, the side that has the water hose has to be on the side of the motor that has the water pump intake. Am I wrong? If I'm wrong, why does my pump not stream the water if it's on one way, but if I flip it, water comes peeing out like it ought to?

Re: Boat muff placement

It should not make any difference which side the hose is on. The intake ports on each side of the leg (if Late Force/Mercury) or each side of the gearcase torpedo (if early Force) both go into a common chamber.

In fact, the marinas around here have a muff that uses a thick wire that passes through the leg and uses an external clamp to secure both sides of the muff to the leg.

It does take some time to prime the pump if your water pressure is low but if that is not the case, check for clogs on the offending side inlet holes.

I was hoping you'd reply Frank, as it seems you're the Force guru around these parts. :D

Maybe it is just that it takes time to prime, and by the time I switch it over to the other side, it's finally primed. I have great water pressure. In fact, water is pouring out around them before I fire the engine up. Tight fit on the muffs too. When I put it in the lake, it pumps almost immediately, but on the hose, has taken as long as 10 seconds before I've shut it off and flipped the muffs. Does that sound normal? They intakes on either side LOOK clear. ??

well im not frank but I do own a 1994 120 force and what I can tell you is I believe its normal.
Mine has done that everytime with the muffs, but in the lake it sprays out really nicely.
Doesn't matter which side the hose is on like frank said.
What's important is that your motor isn't overheating.

Thanks bentle. Having it overheat is my fear...especially after reading folks on here talk about even the briefest of dry starts in the driveway can ruin them. I'm scared every time it hesistates to start peeing water.
