You probably got it right, I have one much like it that is having the same problem. Mine won't even open up in the test barrel until I remove the cover. I am planning on replacing the gasket this winter...

--Jason

so it is the gasket that joins from the leg to the top of the engine

do you guys have sound insulation blankets inside the cover that fall down and get into the carb intakes or the throttle linkages?

Re: boat not running good with cover on

I am not for sure on your motor because I have not ever looked at a 50 but all the other Johnson's I have owned have a air breather located below the carb in the outer shell of the motor casing. They are supposed to be cleaned periodically just like the breather on your lawnmower. I had a 40 and got it running good at the house without the cover. Took it to the river and it wouldn't stay started. Cleaned the filter and it kept running.

You might also want to check around the power head adaptor gasket. If this leaks, exhaust will leak in under the hood and the engine will start breathing it's own exhaust.

If you notice a lot of exhaust around the power head, find out where it's coming from. Blown adaptor gaskets are usually accompanied by an oily mess in the lower pan. And do check the other areas as covered by the other guys' posts.

I believe on your 50, the hood air intake is located under the hoods hand grip. Might check here for any pluggage.

I don't know if your 50 is built like my 10, but I tried the same thing with some hi-temp silicone sealant, and there was really no way to get in there well enough to really seal it up, just made a mess is all...

Most probable cause.

If the adapter gasket is leaking, you have to replace it. RTV won't cut it.
