I had to replace the engine in my '82 Grady White Tournament 224. Originally came with a 3.7 485 mercruiser engine but died and was replaced with Chevy 350 260 hp and appropriate outdrive. Runs great, but the boat now has a rather prominent list to port. I know the 350 is a much heavier engine, but would it be that much heavier on one side of it to cause this list?

The 350 isn't perfect and weight variations depend on items mounted to it (Starter, Alternator, Power Steering, etc), but do see the 224 had a factory option for the 260. Did you move the batteries or other items to other locations with the change over?

If not, what about moving some items to the other side?

Prop Torque. Most single engine boats list to port. The larger Plant equals a larger Prop, equals More Pronounced List from Prop Torque.

All is as all was as far as battery location. Does appear that the engine could be a bit heavier on the port side due to the starter, alternator etc. but I didn't think that it would have been enough to cause a list to that extent. This will only be compounded by the fact that the port side of the transom is where I planned on mounting the 110 lb kicker! Even with my 220 lbs at the starboard side helm things aren't quite what they should be! Oh well, guess ill have to rethink things. On the bright side, the trim tabs can level things out underway! Thanks!!

I did not know that about prop torque. Actually does make sense to me! I'll pay more attention to that if I can get out again! Asante!

The list your discussing is at rest not underway correct?

weight the boat. a 37 year old grady white may be holding 500# of water in the flotation foam.

specs have the dry boat/hull/motor/drive (260hp) at 3500#

Yes, the list is both at rest and underway. However, the trim tabs do level things out underway at plane. I've thought of waterlogged foam and that maybe a possibility (l hope not) but the boat was level with the 3.7 in it. Before I pull it out, ill weigh the trailer unloaded, then with the boat and see what I come up with. I was always curious about the boats weight , especially since the 350 was installed! I appreciate you guys helping me out here!

My cruiser list to starboard slightly at rest, and I can level it by adding more fresh water to the holding tank, but then again its only slightly and no need to haul more weight then needed for just sitting
