I’m relatively new to owning a boat. We bought an old used boat. The boat plows through the water at about 2500 rpms at WOT. We found that if we drive it for at least 30 minutes, then grab dinner, it magically gets to 3000 rpms at WOT. It’s a mercruiser 165 that is supposed to run between 4,000 and 4,600.

I’m going to work through the stuff stickied related to low rpm at WOT, but wondering if anyone has seen this before?

Sounds like it just won't reach WOT. Assuming the boat has an Alpha drive

Suggest start with a compression test. Doing the compression test will tell us what the health of the motor is. Disconnect wires off the + side of the coil, place throttle at WOT position and see what you get for numbers.

Then see what pitch prop is on it. Someone may have placed to high a pitch on the boat
