On the new boat, it uses this style plug:

Does it just thread in with the square part out the back or what? How does this style make a seal?

Re: Boat plug.....

That is a "tapered" pipe plug. A seal is formed by the interferace of the threads on the plug with the threads in the female fitting.

In order to seal the plug should be "snug" not tight.

you can by one at lowes, home depot, or any hardware store. get a brass one. it is just a regular 1/2 inch pipe thread.

The square end should be facing towards the back (outside the boat). I also use a little Teflon tape for the threads.

Re: Boat plug.....

Well if one of you figures out how to get one installed with the square part pointed in then rock on :p

I have been using this type for over 10 years now, and I love them. They do not wear, oil or crap doesn't mess them up, and pipe thread seals without anything on the threads, especially brass. I only make them reasonably tight too. They aren't going anywhere. BTW, it is called a garboard plug . . .
