I'm' sure this has been covered before, but I have a 17' Sunbird that runs fine, no problems. My wife has really bad knees, and when the bay gets choppy, she really takes a beating. We keep the boat in and around the Fire island inlet, and East islip regions.

I'd like to move up 19 a 21 or 21' boat. I would mostly stay in the bay, maybe on calm days venture into the ocean.

What boat do you recommend that won't bounce so much, and remortgage won't have to re-mortgage my house to get?

Thanks!

Deep V hull will ride the best. There are many out there depending on the type you want. Cuddy cabins can be had cheaper and offer a place to get out of the sun. A center console might ride nice but I would not consider it comfortable for your wife's knee's.

There are plenty of Walk Around boats that will fill your bill due to the fishing boats having 19 degree or more deadrises. Look for something that has some weight since it will "plow" the water better giving a better ride. My Trophy 2052 takes the 2 - 3 foot chop on the south shore very nice. It's got a strong hull with foam filled fiberglass stringers, stainless steel fittings which are through bolted with backing plates, a vinylester skin coat to prevent blistering and many other features. But most of all, being a heavy boat and it takes the chop great. A cruiser it's not. It's basically a bare bones fishing boat. But my wife loves going out with me on it and we do mostly crusing. :)

Thanks Bob, and Richie. i appreciate the info. I was looking at Deep v hulls, but hadn'y thought of the weight factor.

Thanks again!

Catamaran fishing boats also handle chop really well. However they aren't always the most practical choice. As they can be pricey, hard to find, and not have much in the way of seating. Still, keep one eye open for one.
