Boat puking gas on floor

Yesterday after running my boats motor for awhile in my drive way (with earmuffs), I backed into the garage and went about other business. Around 6 pm my kids started complaining about the garage smelling like gas. I went out and found that about (I'm guessing) a quart of gas came out of the gas tank vent onto the garage floor and ran along the chines of the hull creating a nice, long drizzle of gas on the floor. The sun comes into the garage in the late afternoon.

I'm guessing the gas tank which was full, got warm and the gas expanded and pushed out the tank vent. Is that normal on a old boat (88)?

FYI: it is a Volvo i/o, underfloor gas tank..filler and vent comes out of the stern.

Cincy, This will happen on any boat, when the tank is filled with cool gasoline and sits in the hot sun, especially on a trailer. The gasoline expands and overflows.

yes, especially if filled with the bow down, and then store with bow up.
