boat ran great then sat up over the winter

In TX we don't really have much of a winter, but the boat sat with plugs pulled and battery disco'd thru the 4-5 month of winter.

We had a terribly hot summer last year, so the boat hasn't been used much since June of last year.

Long story short, I changed the engine and the drive oil, put the 5 blue plugs in, reconnected the battery and BLAMMO she fired right up on muffs. O pressure looked great, came up to temp and held...all seems GREAT. No need to worry.

Got the boat dropped in the water...BLAMMO fired right and idled fine.

Got out of the no wake zone, eased into the throttle got up on plane and the sputtering and bogging started. Limped back to the dock by feathering the throttle, it died a few time along the way.

My initial thought was the fuel. But it smells fine and has stabil over the winter. Called dad... he asked if we left fuel in the carb over the winter... We did. He recommended pulling the carb off and giving it a good cleaning. Sounds logical to me.

Any other idea on things to check?

TIA

take a sample of the fuel from the tank. put it in a clear container. also take your fuel/water separator filter off and drain the contents into another clear containter. let both sit for a few hours. if you see separation, you have water in the fuel. If your running e-10 fuel, even stabil will have a problem keeping the ethanol from breaking down after 6 months.

if you have water, you need to drain the tank, replace the filters, service the carb (most likely a rebuild) and then put in fresh fuel.

Thanks Scott, I will definitely be checking the fuel for water.

Any other ideas anyone?

Suspect your dad is right, your accelerator pump is most likely bad. With engine off have someone pump the throttle while looking down the carb and see if there is any squirt from the pump.

well before I got the chance to pull the carb off, buddy dumped in a bottle of seafoam. things cleared right after 20-30 minutes running on muffs.

IMHO not the best fix, but at least we didn't have to tear down a carb. I will tear it down and rebuild it after the season.

Ran fine on muffs before too. Hopefully you don't have a repeat of your last outing.

we had it out yesterday and the seafoam seemed to "unclog" the dirty carb.
