Boat Rolls Left on Take off

When I apply throttle, boat rolls to left bad like it's going to corkscrew underwater. Has power tilt and you can avoid most of it by milking the trim as it accelerates, but it's scarry. Boat is a small 14 !/2' Bass Master fiberglass (like a pro craft) with a 48SPL Johnson and a whale tale on it. Even after planing and triming, boat still seems to favor the left side a litte - meaning that it rides a little lower to the left. Equipment is fairly well balanced, boat sits good at rest in water.

Check to see if the engine is centered on the transom.

Try a different prop. Pitch might be a problem.

Is the hydrofoil on straight?

Is the boat trailered quite often on a roller trailer?

TMD

You might take a look under the boat and inspect the hull.....Make sure you don't have a big dinger on the bottom somewhere...... :)

Tedzra,

I'm going to move this to boat questions. Others may benefit from the answers there. This could be a hull/setup issue.

Re: Boat Rolls Left on Take off

Wow, thanks guys, I took the whale tale off, It looked old, tired and the skegs weren't the same set (one on each side) The prop is rough, with one blade having a 1/4" half moon bite out of the middle of the blade, and a 1/4 " ground off from pavement damage. One other blade kinda rough, so I filed them down trying to keep the original curves, still some imperfections 1/16" or so deep, but better. Motor looks plumb as judged by it sitting pretty much on the transom edge which is straight. Will try and go to the lake tomorrow and let you know. Thanks again. Tedzra

Re: Boat Rolls Left on Take off

Tedzra;

You got some good advice, and now you need to see if there is a difference. My guess is that the list to the left will have been minimized if not totaly gone. The two things that you have addressed - the hydrofoil and the prop - can and often do make the boat list to the port side. You will also notice that the boat is more sluggish out of the hole. The extra lift from the additional planning surface (hydrofoil) is gone.

The rotation of the motor ( single motor I/O's or outboards)is clockwise, and the resistance of the torque makes the boat lean left (opposite the rotation of the prop). To off set this list, the boat manufacturers typically set the boat up with either a right hand steering helm, or other methods to counter balance this torque. When props are changed, or dammaged the torque list may become more noticeable.

When adding a hydrofoil ( even new) the concentration of lift is moved to the center of the boat, and if the boat has a tendency to list, this could make it worse. Remember the teeter totter at the playground, the boat begins to balance on the center of the lift presure, in this case the keel/motor.

If you want more stability and a better hole shot, and in general more control, you need to add Trim Tabs (Smart Tabs). Do a search on this site for more information, but understand that the improvements in handling are significant with the addition of an adjustable section of the hull(Trim Tabs / Smart Tabs). Every airplane froom the smallest to the largest has an adjustable hull (wing flaps and trim tabs.)try www.nauticusinc.com for more info.

Replacing the prop would be the place to start.

Hey All, Finally got to lake without the whale tail and problem was solved by its removal. Boat performs much better without it, at least with one person onboard.
Thanks Again!
Tedzra

Also make sure that your anti-torque rudder/zinc is properly pitched. You should be able to run with no hands on the wheel.
