OK, heres the story:

My uncle passed away last fall from cancer and I have become the proud owner of his boat :) The boat had been sitting outside for 2+ years while he was sick (Northern IN). I removed all of the old gas and put approx. 5 gallons of new gas and a can of seafoam in the tank.

The boat is a 1995 Nitro 170dc with a 1997 Mercury 115hp engine. When I try to start it, it will run for a couple seconds and then quit. It will not start again until I pump the throttle but even then only a couple seconds  I have been told from people in other forums that it sounds like the low speed jets are plugged. I have verified the following:

- Fuel tank vent IS open
- Primer ball does NOT "suck closed" while it is running
- Water pump is working (don't know if that matters)

I have noticed that even when I prime it, the fuel filter only fills about half way. I have decided to take the carbs off and clean them but before I do that I wanted some opinions on whether I am barking up the wrong tree? Could it just be the filter or the fuel pump??? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Cleaning the carbs would be a good start. If there was gas in the carbs when it was parked you can bet on them being clogged up,make sure all the jets and passageways are very clean, when you think it is clean enough, clean them one more time to be sure. A good manual will help also.

Thanks! I got the carbs cleaned (I do have a service manual). Wondering if I should mess with the fuel pump? Thoughts...

You're describing fuel pump failure. Kit's about 20 bucks. Throw it in.

Be sure your fuel supply lines are in good shape. A little air leak on the suction side can cause a lot of problems.

Should be a nice boat when you get it running. Be careful you don't try to push the engine if it's balking, especially at WOT. Fuel problems can quickly turn into piston problems. They like to be a bit on the fat side.

hope it helps
