Hello, I am brand new to the site and am hoping for a little input on a bad situation I am having. I work for an engineering company and we have a custom made work boat for doing hydrographic surveys and other miscellaneous work on the water. Recently theft has been a major problem here in Miami. A few weeks ago I, along with 10 other boats got our lower units stolen while in dry storage at a local marina. Since it is a work boat the insurance deductible is very high ($5000) so the 2 lower units had to come out of pocket. We can not have anything like this happen again. I want to lock the pair of Yamaha 150's to the transom, the lower units to the engine, and the props to the lower units. I would like to have something that is permanent that I don't have to remove everyday. Anyone have any suggestions, brands, reviews, or any input???

Re: Boat Security

Move it to a marina that has security and insurance or take it home and put it in a locked garage.

Re: Boat Security

If you have it in dry storage at the marina....why not move it to a storage facility that has a chain link fence...security cameras....ect,wherever you go,make it somewhere safe, there's no way to attach top to middle middle to bottom but there are prop locks.

Re: Boat Security

look around for some tamperproof fastners to hold things on. they are not theft proof, cause if someone is determined to steal it , it is gone. Check out mcmastercarr.com for the fastners. they have special lock nuts that require a special socket to install and remove. how about some sort of club like device that hooks around the prop and locked to the transom. there are prop locks check out iboats or westmarine Just remember, locks just keep honest people honest, a thief will still get it if he wants bad enough .The thing is to make it harder to steal than the thief has time to mess with.

Re: Boat Security

Thanks, I have been looking at the different locking fasteners, and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with any of them? The boat is inside a chain link/barbwire/medico locked area, with a so called "security officer" 24/7. In the last month there have been at least 10 lower units stolen. All Yamaha 4 strokes.

Not to be overly paranoid, but this sounds like an inside job. Get your boats out of there.

10 lower units in a month? Was the security guard fired? Was extra security put in place? If the answers to either of these is no, the place is suspect.

Ask to see a copy of the insurance policy on the place as well. It is quite possible that they have a theft rider that they are collecting on or that you can file a claim against. If they refuse, offer to have the Attorney General?s office investigate them for insurance fraud.
