I have some information and observations for those that may be interested in an entry-level boat. I was at the Fort Washington boat show yesterday and gathered some information. The brands are listed in the order in which I perceived as higher quality (fit and finish) to lower quality. Prices are the “Show Price” (No haggling) and include freight and prep unless otherwise noted. Some of the prices were much less (1000’s of dollars) then MSRP. Please feel free to add your comments.

Four Winns:

190 Horizon (2004), 5.0L (220HP) Mercruiser I/O, $26850
180 Freedom (2004), 150HP Johnson OB, $21400
180 Freedom (2003), 150HP Johnson OB, $19700
(Best of the bunch.)

Caravelle:

187LS (2003), 4.3L (190HP) Mercruiser I/O, $18500
187LS (2004), 4.3L (190HP) Mercruiser I/O, $19650
(This and Chaparral were pretty even. Big gap at deck/hull joint on transom, filled with silicon. If there was no gap in the deck/hull joint, Caravelle would beat Chaparral hands down.)

Chaparral:

180ssi (2004), 4.3L (190HP) Mercruiser I/O, $18995
(Not sure this price included freight and prep. Remember “Suds” before buying!)

Bayliner:

185 Capri (2004), 4.3L (190HP) Mercruiser I/O, $17500
180 Capri (2004), 125HP Mercury OB, $15995
205 Capri (2004), 5.0L (220HP) Mercruiser I/O, $20995
210 Classic (2003), 5.0L (220HP) Mercruiser I/O, $20864 (Not at show)
215 Classic (2003), 5.0L (220HP) Mercruiser I/O, $18459 (Not at show)
(Fit and finish not too bad for a value boat.)

Seaswirl (Sport Boats):

190 VEC (2003), 4.3L (190HP) Mercruiser I/O, $19250
210 VEC (2003), 5.0L (220HP) Mercruiser I/O, $22750
(The fit and finish on these was very poor. There was even a good amount of flex in the floor of the 210 VEC.)

EDIT: All Boats included a trailer.

Thanks for posting that RatFish. While I was looking at a little bigger boats, the prices I bumped into were sobering too -

BoatingABC.com » ... » 04 Phoenix bowrider $$

Too bad the Seaswirls didn't measure up, their fishing boats are fairly well respected.

Kelly Cook

Thanks Kelly. Good post on the other forum! I feel any info we can share with fellow boaters is good info.

As for the Seaswirls, the fishing boats were not bad. They have a pretty good reputation in these parts. The sport boats I saw were another story. Two words to describe them would be "cheap and shoddy".

Interesting to see prices with OB motors. Dealers in my area won't stock these unless they are the bass boat type fish-n-ski.

"180 Freedom (2004), 150HP Johnson OB, $21400"
Yikes! That is one expensive entry level boat. Small wonder I/O rigs took over the market.

Did you happen to see the "new" Mariahs? Don't have those here yet. Reviews I have seen posted so far have been pretty mixed.

Kelly

Hey roscoe!

That's a dead ringer for what I have now! I paid about $1400 for that rig in 1985 (12' with 9.9 Evinrude). My how times have changed.

Can't remember for sure.
I saw one like this at a boat show last year.
12" Lund,
a cheap little trailer,
and a 5 or 6hp motor, I think.
I think it might have included a gas tank and oars too.

KCook...The prices listed in your link seem higher than I saw in the Boston area. For instance...neighbor of mine bought neww Crownline 202, Alpha, 5.0L 260? with trailer, cap exhaust, and a few extras, etc for $28K. What part of the country are you in?

MrBill - As stated in the title of that thread, I am in Phoenix, AZ. It certainly is interesting to learn about the price differences in other markets. That is why I like to see boat show summaries like the one by RatFish.

Kelly
