Okay here's my latest problem. The last few times I've taken my boat out I've noticed problems with it stalling when I try to accelerate. I can start up no problem and I can cruise on idle with out any issue. It's only when I try to get out of idle and give it gas it die's out. If I'm in idle and punch it pretty good and then bring back the throttle it seems to work ok. The only problem everybody on the boat fall back. I've checked for vacum leaks tried messing around with the carb. Still not fixed has anyone seen this before or know someone who has. I've been looking around in the local library for service manuals but there always out or they don't have any good info. I'm sure with all the boating experience on this board someone has seen this and knows how to fix it. Forgot to mention the most important details it's a I/O 4 cylinder volvo with a pentra 270 outdrive Thanks in advance

Re: Boat Stalling

If it stalls when going from neutral to fwd,see if it does the same when going from neutral to reverse. If it does then your momentary switch is the culprit or you are shifting too slowly.Charlie

I also suspect the accelerator pump is worn, when you advance it slowly fuel leaks around the pump and no fuel get pumped into the carb. When you do it fast it will pump fuel.

Might want to make sure the choke plate is fully open after warm-up as well.

Re: Boat Stalling

John, I beleive you have a Solex carb on your Volvo, which will not have a choke plate, but does have many places for dirt to hide. They will idle and run well at low speed when full of crap but will not allow proper high speed operation. You may be able to get up to speed by pumping the throttle, but maybe not. Make sure you have a good inline filter/separator, then remove carb from engine and totally disassemble in a clean pan. I use plain gasoline for a solvent with a soft bristle brush. You will not beleive what comes out. The outcome will be a much better running boat. You can do it in 2 hours if you've never done it before. I have 3 on my boat and can do them all in a little more than that.

Good luck, David
1972 Glastron/Volvo Penta AQ170/270

Re: Boat Stalling

It hasn't been service in about 2 years or about 60 hours. It only dies out when I try to accelerate slowly if I punch it , it will go I just have to ease up on the gas to slow down. It only happens when going forward. I checked the pump it and it does pump out gas when I give it some. I'm going to take the carb out and give it a good cleaning today and also replace the water filter. I'm just trying to locate a service manual from the local library. In case I run into something I'm not familiar with. Once again thanks to all for your replies and keep it coming.

Re: Boat Stalling

Alright I've got the boat fixed it ended up being the coil. Not sure why but someone else suggested it and for 18 bucks it was worth the try. On the way home from testing it my motor drops and now it just hangs there. Not familiar with the area of the boat at all. Can someone tell me what needs to be done. Once again thanks to everyone who has replied.
