I hope someone can help me ( I posted on the Crownline forum also). I have a strange issue that came out of nowhere:
Boat is new to me as of May 2015. The boat is a 2002 202BR with 180 hours.
Volvo Penta 5.0GL-B with SX-M drive.
This past weekend I pulled the outdrive to inspect the gimbal and replace the bellows for piece of mind and just to learn how to do it since it is a maintenance item. We went boating this past Saturday with no issues at all. I pulled the drive early Sunday morning and ordered some parts (bellows, o-rings, engine alignment tool, etc). I also replaced the shift cable due to stiffness in the remote throttle control. I reinstalled the drive last night and got everything back together as it should be. Shift cable has remote control running smooth again.
Today I stopped by the storage yard and pulled to boat out to hook up on muffs just to make sure it was ok and that there would be no problems with the drive.
When I started the boat, it started fine but I noticed all the gauges were not working right. Here is what I noticed:
1. Fuel gauge works fine (well it pegs full, but the tank is pretty full)
2. Hour meter will not light, tach will not move, depth gauge doesn't show
anything
3. Turn on blower and the engine alarm beeps even with key off
4. Horn makes engine alarm beep rather than horn blow
5. Turning on radio accessory switch make the alarm beep but sound like a
beep that is dying
Here is the kicker. After I turned the boat off and notice all the above with the battery on, but boat not running, I tried to start again and all the gagues responded normally for a few seconds until going back to acting up.
My first thought was the battery was dying or almost dead. I pulled the battery and took it to the local auto parts store. The batter tested with a full charge and good according to their machine. I took it back to the boat and checked to make sure the cables were installed tight at the battery and the ground and power to starter were not loose, all seem good.
Please, does anyone have any idea what could be causing the issues? It gets power and turns over, but all of a sudden is going haywire electrically. Could I have done something crazy when I pulled the drive or replaced the shift cable? I am at a total loss.....
