Boat Stereo Shuts Off After 5-10 Seconds - Trying to Install

I'm working on installing a new stereo in my boat, and am having an issue. It's an 80wx4 channel stereo and I have it hooked up with just two back speakers. Once I wire everything together and turn the ignition on, the stereo lights up for about 5-10 seconds, and then shuts itself off. I can't turn it back on after it does this. Can't operate it either for the few seconds it lights up either. What should I do?

Verify that you have 12 volts at the stereo with the stereo turned on. If the stereo pulls too much power for the installed wiring, the voltage at the stereo will be low. Stereo's will have an internal circuit to protect itself if the applied power is not within it's operating range. This will often happen if the volume is turned up. The stereo will work fine with the volume turned down low, then break up or turn off as the volume is increased.

Okay, got the stereo working, but it doesn't sound just right. I can hear the instrumentals well, but not the voices. I'm wondering if it's just a setting on the stereo. Maybe something else?

It's dark now, so I'll have to try again tomorrow. Any advice is much appreciated!
