I have a 17' Nitro with a 90HP Merc. I have added a Hydrofoil Stabalizer to help plane quicker. I took the boat out on Friday and to my suprise when I open it up the boat seems to start tilting to the drivers side. Is there a wrong way to install a Hydrofoil ? It looks like it installed right.. Any suggestions ???

Remember that the Hydrofoil is providing lift to the stern even when the boat is on plane and running at cruising speeds. If nothing else has changed, you should first make sure that you are triming the motor out far enough when cruising. Sounds like the bow is being pushed down too much. Also, how does the boat handle in turns?

Once I open the boat up it seems kind of hard to steer. It steers better at 3/4 speed.. Do you think I am not trimming it properly ?

jkurtz29, that was totally uncalled for!
i do think that maybe it is weight distribution problem, but i'm not saying your too fat. when it leans to one side is it with just you in the boat? if so that is to be expected, but if it leans over when someone is sitting on the other side of the boat it could be a problem. possibly the bow plowing will do that but usually if it is plowing it will lean to either side, not just one side. try trimming out, which should raise the bow a little.
the steering issue could be the trim tab on the lower unit(just above the prop), make sure it is somewhat straight. i have heard that a hook in the hull can cause a leaning condition as well! you can do a search on the forum for a hook in the hull, to get some info there. hope you get it figured out. :)

ezt13,

Sounds like you are running bow down at speeds. If the motor trim does not eliminate the propoising and steering issues, try removing the Hydrofoil and see if the problem stops. your problem is common. If the problem is eliminated with the removal of the hydrofoil, do a search on this site for Trim Tabs or Smart Tabs and review the comments.

I think you guys are right, now that I think about it when I have opened it up I am trimmed all the way down. I'll try trimming up once I get up to speed. I know for a fact it's not the wieght thing I am not a big fellow and it did it with my buddy sitting on the passanger side. Thanks for taking the time and giving me the advise. :)
