I have a 1988 OMC v6 with a cobra stern drive on a 20ft cuddy. We do a lot of canal boating at slow speeds (1000 rpm) and the boat wanders. It has power steering and you have to constantly correct for it. Is this normal or can something be done to correct this. At 3000 rpm the boat steers fine. Thanks for your help.

Steering like that is pretty normal for slow going. Wind or current will have more affect on a hull at slow speed and things like the direction of the prop turning produces torque. The slower the boat goes, the more you have to correct or, the more you have to turn the steering wheel to make a small corection in coarse.

The faster the water goes past your outdrive or rudder the more accurate or direct the steering.

Cape Coral is sure one beautiful city to get lost in on the canals.

Mike.

There is one method of correction that I can suggest if you're doing a lot of slow work.
Bolt an oversize rudder to the rudder skeg of the drive unit. Make the holes small and keep them where they won't need to go through hollow areas.
You'll find this keeps the problem of wandering away.
Alternatively make a 'clip on' arrangement to do the same job.
Ross

davjar,

What you are experiencing is known as: "deep V wander".

It is quite normal. You can minimize it somewhat by disciplining yourself to not overcorrect with the steering input.

I haven't tried Ross' idea.
