hey guys im new to the whole boating world and new to this forum site. anyways i need some help, my problem is that when the outdrive is disconnected from the boat it DOES go into reverse gear, also on the boat end, the shift cable DOES go into reverse when manually shifting. when they are together it DOES NOT go into reverse gear. i do have neautral and forward. also me and my uncle replaced the shift cable that goes to the outdrive. there is a nut that screws into the (housing?- dont know the correct name) after the bellow). does anyone know if that nut has to be tighted all the way into the threads? because when we took it off it was only half-way tightened. any pics on this stuff? i will post a pic of what it looks like tomorrow. ANY IDEAS PLEASE!! i want to get in the water asap. Thank you

Sounds to me like you have one of 2 problems if not both.#1,if you had the drive split in 2 halves to service the waterpump, the lower was not in forward whe.n you put it back together.Been there....done that....#2 The boat shifter was not in full forward when you put the drive on.
did you consult a manual when doing this. What type od drive are we talking about??? Sounds like it may be an alpha.Charlie

One or both of my suggestions will get you right. Can the boat shifter move freely from fwd to neutral and reverse?? If it does then the shifter was probably in fwd as it should be.Then you will need to drop the lower and lock the lower in fwd before you put the drive back together.Did you have the drive apart????? hey guys... it was that nut, just had to be tightened a little more. sprayed sum wd-40 and robo grip on the end of the socket and turned the socket. (need a REALLY deep socket and they do not sell it any any automotive stores).
