If I need to replace an existing, albeit non-functioning engine (currently has 400cc) in an 1992 rinker I/O, can I simply purchase a rebuilt car engine and drop it into the mounting brackets or is a boat engine inherently different from a standard car engine (if different, how and is there a price premium for that difference?). Any help is appreciated.

Re: Boat with no engine

There are several differences in marine engines. They have been modified and adapted to work in the marine environment. This does result in a higher price as there are a lot less boat engines made than car engines.

There are some car components which you definitely do not want to use on a boat. For example, using a car alternator on a boat will dramatically improve your chances of having an explosion. It sounds like you were just talking about the block but I thought this might be good to point out.

this topic has been talked about numerous times so use the search function and you will find your answers.

Most likely you can use the block from a truck and put on the alt, starter, plugs etc. from your current motor.

good luck
