boat wont plane..

I just purchased a 1980 17' sportcraft CC with a evinrude 60hp...after cleaning the carbs the engine runs fine now my issue is I can't barely get the boat to plane at all. When I go WOT the motor sounds under stress and the bow rides very high. After getting up near the bow the boat will plane out and motor runs strong. I believe the 60hp is to small for the boat but it should be able to get it to plane out. The prop is 13 1/4 X 17 ....is that the size prop I should be running or something smaller, the tach doesn't work right now so I dont know what its reving....thanks for any help

Hey duck, is that the same motor+prop combo that was on the boat used by the previous owner?

What is the boat rated for max HP? There should be a plate on or near the transom of the boat that states the weight capacity and max HP.

17p seems way too much pitch based upon the limited info provided. Just a baseline guess for that boat+motor setup would be a 13p 4 blade. (Low HP to weight ratio)

Picking the correct prop requires that you can read RPM at WOT. It's critical that you select a prop that allows WOT at the top of the recomended RPM range for that motor.

When you have a prop that puts you in the correct RPM range your boat will plane and be performing at it's best.

im thinking a 17p might be a little too much prop. getting a working tach on there would be real nice.

Yes, a tach is a must to assure motor health and good performance.
While I think it should plane a little easier the boat does weigh about 1400lbs dry
so your asking a lot of a 60.A 15" prop is a better match.We could tell alot better
what you need with your max rpm and speed.

must be a heavy boat...

any chance it is old and the foam flotation is soaked with watter, thus adding hundreds of lbs to the weight of the boat?

have you ever weighed the rig??

what setting is trim pin on?

move it all the way down in...( assuming you have power TNT)

once you get the boat up on plane what is the rpm at wide open throttle??

your motor may be running poorly..you cant tell till you get the rpms up
