I still wonder if PFDs were being worn.

After having my own close call years back (Too fast at night...distracted with passengers), I realized how quickly things can go wrong.
I am a great swimmer...but I realized I could get knocked unconscious and drown.

Always wear that PFD!!!

How sad! Let's wait on the investigation to be complete,,,, but no shock alcohol was involved.

The no wake rule after dark is a good one even without alcohol , wearing a pfd thinking good night vision moonlit and extensive knowlage of the lake would let me run at WOT I almost hit a metal buoy Identifying a no Wake Zone that was father out from the launch area than I remembered as I was heading over to investigate lights at the launch thinking some one was messing with my truck/trailer as it was late early am .I still see that buoy anytime I go out and stay after dark as its so tempting to drive it that fast at night .

Sorry I didn't read article just ranting about boating /alcohol /PFD's how much safety precations before we /all persons over 55 are suited up like a michelen man after the age of 55 to be safe. They are all preventable after the facts .

Driving fast, at night, approaching or leaving a bridge is very unsafe. The green/red bow light may be enough for others to see you, but aren't enough for you to see where you are going. If you boat at night, have a spotlight.

Sounds like that barge wasn't well lit either. I'm sure there will be some lawsuits from that.

If the driver is found to be legally intoxicated the lights on the barge won't be much of an issue to a judge I imagine because they said it has lights so even if they weren't sufficient the liability (i'm assuming civil suits here) still falls on the drunk driver. While it may be a compounding factor the meat of the case stems from the driver choosing to operate intoxicated. Furthermore if there is any indication that the victims on board knew he had been drinking no judge will give them an award for what comes next.

I'm not sure how much barge traffic you see in Tampa, but around here barges are lit up like a small city at night... and one of the news articles I read on the accident said the barge was well lit.

around here the barges are very poorly lit--but all legal. the problem is that the law on lights doesn't work at all in a busy city harbor with lights everywhere.

realisticly, a group like that on a boat like that on a night like that aren't going to where PFD's. It's not a bunch of guys going striper fishing on a November night. That makes the captain even more responsible for the safety of the passengers.

No wake after dark rule? No way. Maybe on a tiny mountain lake but not crossing the Chesapeake Bay--or a shipping channel for that matter.

They had to be going at a fairly good clip, based on the damage to the boat and the injuries sustained. What a heartache. The couple was going to be married in the church I attended as a youth. So instead of a joyous wedding, they will be conducting a funeral.

When you see a barge at night on the Tennessee river here, it looks like this:

Kinda hard to miss.

i only go out on the boat at night if necessary its too risky around here with the smugglers running from border to border with no lights at all

looks more like a dredge. ours have small yellow or white lights on the corners and that's all. Dredge equipment is worse--500 yards of rusted pipe barely above the surface; rusted unlit mooring barrel up 12' above the surface (in 1 foot chop)

Boating at night is beautiful, especially sailing at night. Unfortunately, there are items in the water that you can't see when it is dark out.

What a tragic story. Unfortunately, this kind of thing happens a lot. This one is probably more popular because it happened close to NYC. I feel very bad for all of the families.
