boating from tampa bay to keys

is it possible to take a boat from tampa bay to any of the florida keys if u have a big enough gas tank? anyone ever done it?

It is appx 280 NM from Tampa to Key West.
Anything is possible. If your vessel is not up to the challenge and you are not trained or experienced, it is not advisable.

Lots of shallow water, mangrove swamps, many small islands, channels, the gulf of Mexico. Better check your charts, plan your trip, overnighting, shallow draft running, plenty of fuel.....it could be done with good planning. An airboat would be great for a trip like this!

Can you make it - yes. Should you - depends on your wallet.

I know a few people that have boated between Tampa Bay and Key west. They all have the disposable income to spend on $2-3K of fuel that I do not have. My daughters boyfriend and his father went down and back a few months ago and burned thru about 400 gallons. Another friend with twin 750hp big blocks did it and burned thru a bit of fuel as well.
