boating on St. Joe river in IN and MI

This summer I will be in the Niles, MI area with my boat (16' Zodiac). I was thinking of running it on the St. Joe river in places between Benton Harbor, MI and South Bend, IN.

I know that there are dams in Niles, SB, and Berrien Springs.

Is there anything else I should know before I do this (i.e. shallow spots, obstacles, restricted areas)?

Anyone know what the usual depth of the St. Joe river is in this area?

I just move from South Bend last spring and we boated out of St. Joe Silver Beach was great and that river has several shallow spots and I can say between South Bned Niles and South Bend I suggest a Kayak and there are like 3 dams in the South Bend area alone.
