Boatist, understand you have an X-50....
How has it worked for you???
I got one dirt-cheap in perfect condition and am considering mounting it up-front for use with my trolling motor when I'm in the front. I've got 2 Garmin units on the dash, 1 GPS and 1 locator, and I've got a lowrance digital readout for depth up front but was looking for a screen-type for verticle fishing.
Over-all, what do you think??
thx.

Re: Boatist-fishfinder help, Lowrance X-50

My X50 has been great since new. In fact I like it better than any new Lowrance unit. However for deep salt water it is good only to about 200 feet with the standard 20 degree 192 KHZ transducer. Deeper than that I would see bottom but no fish. I got a 8 degree 192khz transducer and it works good out to 500 feet of saltwater for finding Bottom fish or rock fish.

The vertical resolution is only 192 pixels and it has no zoom to expand the bottom so to see small fish in deep water you need to use bottom track. Bottom track on this unit will let you expand the bottom as much as your want. You can set for bottom and up 10 feet so you only see the bottom 10 feet, or any number of feet over 10 feet. When rock fishing in deep water I found bottom and up 50 feet works very well. So if your fishing 400 feet deep you will display the water from 350 feet to 400 feet. At that setting it see even small rock fish. To set the bottom track on this unit you put in the number of feet you want to display (must be 10 feet or more) from the keyboard then hit 2nd function bottom track (8). To go back to full water depth you hit Clear, 2nd function, bottom track or 8.

If you are running a number of depth finders they will usually interfeer with each other. Keep in mind the transducer frequency is 192Khz.

I only wish the new lowrance units had bottom track, I would buy one of the new color ones this year if they had this feature.

Re: Boatist-fishfinder help, Lowrance X-50

It may be a problem. The boat I fish on when fishing a tournament has two Lowrance X5 on it. They both have 20 degree transducers and the boat is 19 feet. One transducer is glued to the bottom near the stern the other is on the trolling motor but pointed a little foward. A 20 degree transducer will cover a circle about 1/3 of the depth. So in 30 feet of water each transducer covers a 10 foot circle. In shallow water they both work ok but when go deeper than about 35 feet they interfeer. If you turn the sensitive way up then they interfeer is less than 30 feet. In winter when fishing as deep a 60 feet for bass you can only use one at a time. When fishing usually shut the back unit off when turn the main motor off. You will catch more fish if your turn the back unit off. You need to be watching the line not the fish finder.

Gotcha...It's just we have very small (10ft diameter or less) areas of salt-cedsr that harbor crappie in the late winter, early spring, in 30-35ft water, and if ya can't stay on the brush you can forget the fish.
I'm starting to wonder if maybe I should have the 250C on the front.........
