Trying to find out how different boats, engines (i.e. outboard, jet propulsion, etc...) perform to uprunning rivers including small rapids. Say current 5 to 10 mph or more. I am particularly interested in canoes doing this. Anyone with experience in this kind of boating, I would appreciate your comments.

You need a jet for the type of use you are talking about. You can use an inboard jet as described above or an outboard jet where the lower unit is equiped with a jet pump instead of a prop unit. The outboards work well on smaller boats that are designed for shallow water.<br />The only thing I have ever seen that will get a canoe up the rapids is a strong back to carry it around the rough water. :D
