I'm curious what type of boats uses the "closed cooling" system? Is it bigger boats like 24' or are they common in 18' as well?

most larger boats it is standard, on the smaller boats it is an expensive option. many do not buy it.

the close system is only for the engine block. basically like your car. but rather than a radiator, it uses a heat exchanger.

it does not included the exhaust or risers, which are lake/seawater cooled, by the outdrive impeller.

Unless you are boating in saltwater there is not much of an advantage to these set ups. You still have to winterize boats with closed cooling systems.

'Closed cooling or 'fresh water cooling' can be installed on any size inboard engine, and the better systems also include the exhaust manifolds, (though I'm not sure about manifolds that are integral with risers). It also is not difficult to add the system later (thougth they are a bit pricy). I installed it on my 16' inboard.
