I received official word of the closing of Stone Boatyard in Alameda, California. Stone was the oldest boatyard on the west coast, having been in business for 151-years, founded by the Stone family in 1853.

The office walls are covered with old photographs of large, wooden, ocean going vessels build by the boatyard in earlier days. In the last years, they were building lake boats, a.k.a. runabouts. They are absolutely gorgeous! Some of the most beautiful boats I have even seen
and could never afford
$300k+.
They also provided maintenance for yachts. Stone had a tremendous collection of experienced talent that could do whatever was needed to fix any boat. They have been very helpful and supportive of our efforts in the restoration of our boat.

Stone Boatyard has maintained a museum of photographs and archives of original boat plans. Jack, now 93, has been overseeing these documents since retiring from the yard after more than 40-years of building boats there, going back to the 1930s.

It would be appropriate to add Stone Boatyard to the list of California companies closing under the burden of increasing workmans comp insurance rates. While a lot of California companies are moving to Nevada with its lower insurance rates, you cant really take a boatyard to the desert.
