I have a 1983 140 mercruiser 3.0 and a alpha 1 drive. The problem is random and unexpected. Crusing at around 1500rpms the engine starts to bog a little then all a sudden a big clunk and it stops everything in the blink of a eye. Started it back up and ran fine the rest of the day until coming back in at around the same rpm range and happens again. My question is what could cause this and the places i should check. ( the noise is coming from where the outdrive/engine connects)

Thanks ryan

Spun coupler?

Look for metal or rubber shavings at the point where the shaft from the outdrive enters the socket on the engine's flywheel. Probably that part is broken/rotating.

Just a guess though, better minds than mine will chime in.

The boat runs and drives fine except for those two times that it stopped on the spot.

When this happens does the engine die?

When was the last time you checked the drive oil level, changed the drive oil and pulled the drive?
