2004 Trophy 5.0L MPI Mercruiser
Okay, so I have been having major fuel problems for some time now (bogging due to insufficient fuel to the engine) and finally discovered that the fitting on the top of the tank where the fuel comes out to go to the pump (is that called a fuel withdrawal fitting???) is completely corroded. It looked horrible, and when I grabbed it, it came off of the tank and literally disintegrated in my hand. The aluminum (not brass... why not brass???) was almost like powder and paper thin at the end of the hose It seems to have been sucking air into the system and I'm truly amazed that the boat even ran at all with the condition of this fitting. Obviously I have to replace it.
So here's the questions:
1. The fitting on there was aluminum. That seems like a bad idea to me. Shouldn't it be brass? Can I replace it with a brass fitting?
2. Are these fittings custom to a particular model of boat, or are they universal?
3. Is the fitting part of the pickup tube that goes down into the tank or is it just a fitting at the top? Do I have to replace the whole assembly or just the fitting?
4. Any advice or anything I should know before I put a wrench on the fitting and start cranking on it?
5. Is this problem likely to 100% fix my bogging issue or are there other associated things I should look at before I do the "my boat works now" dance?
Thanks in advance,
