I have a '83 mercury 90hp that is bogging when full throttle is applied. It cranks ok and will run great at low RPM. A mechanic tell me the number 4 coil is irregular(jumping around) and could be causing the problem. I believe the problem is in the carbs. I have been through all three carbs twice and they seem to be good Replaced the gas lines and primer. What are the chances the problem is in the coils?

Coils can be switched from one cylinder to another to see where the problem goes.-----Put # 4 in the #1 position and #1 into the 4 position.-----Test compression on all cylinders too.

I have already checked the compression; 122 - 120 on six cylinders. The coil he was talking about was showing inconsistence reading as the rpm increased. I am not sure if this one coil could cause such a bad bog..

Ok then , you or your mechanic will have to do some more trouble shooting / testing / inspection on this motor.
