Bogging Out?

I have a 1988 25HP manual start Evinrude.
I decided to test it on the lake today. When I start increasing the throttle it runs fine until it reaches a certain rpm and then it boggs... I can't increase the throttle past that point at all or it boggs. I don't have an rpm gauge but the revs are pretty low when this happens.
I've already rebuilt the carb, replaced the plugs and gapped them, set the timing and done a link and sync. It also has a new fuel tank with a new primer ball and hose with fresh fuel in it. (The vent on the tank was open) Feels to me like it's not getting fuel or it's sucking to much air.... Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Bogging Out?

Check the bulb when it does this and see if it's going flat or staying firm. Try pumping the bulb and see if the speed increases. Also, try hiting the choke and see what happens. There's also the possibility that the plugs are bad, even though they are new. Happened to me once...

It could be gummed up reed valves, or maybe the fuel pump is going out, like Rick said I have also got bad plugs out of the box, you are using champions arn't you?

Re: Bogging Out?

That problem is usually caused by a clogged restricted high speed jet which is located in the center bottom portion of the float chamber.

Re: Bogging Out?

Thanks a lot Joe.... The problem really felt like it was a fuel problem to me as well.... I soaked the carb all day on Saturday and blew it out with air, reinstalled it, ran it again and it runs perfect. Amazing what a bit of gummed up fuel can do to a carb....
Thanks again,
Springbok.
