boggs when given throttle; no acceleration

8hp mercury ... giving the motor full throttle it will accelerate a few seconds then drop to trolling speed..changed the spark plugs ..same problem ..while running boat to check carburator i placed my finger just inside the carburator throat,instantly the boat accelerated...removed finger it dropped back to crawling speed..any ideas about what should be looked at or replaced.<br /><br /> thanks

Sounds like classic case of fuel restriction probably due to gummy deposits or restricted fixed orifices in carbs.Common problem.I believe when you put fingers in carb throat you simply choked off air volume and combustion momentarily resumed.Also, look for any debris on pick-up tube from fuel tank and fuel filter.Check to insure fuel line to motor is secure and not sucking air.this is assuming you use portable tank.Fuel tank also needs to be venting well or pump won't pull properly.Good luck.
