P/N 176380 and 176381 made between 01/01/2001 and 08/01/2003. "These remote control boxes may have loose or improperly assembled fast idle lever components, which could potentially cause the outboard to stick in gear or in neutral or jam the throttle." FYI They sent me the recall because I bought a new motor. They may not be able to track every control. I hope somone here can shed more light on the problem. I would rather not make the 100mi round trip to my dealer if I can check it out myself. Thanks

On page 2 and 3 of your recall letter, it explains to check for a "white paint dot" on the underside of the box. If there is a white dot, you're ok. If not, raise the warm up lever and look for a white tag (about 1" x 1"). The tag will have a date code stamped on it (second line). If the date code on the tag falls within the range listed, you need to have the box inspected for possible repair or replacement.

If you have any questions about the date code, post it here and I'll try to help you determine what you've got.

-John

No white dot. Date code is 02 I B1. Sept. 2, 2002 build date. Thanks

This made me laugh. I hooked up my new 2004 Johnson to the original 1960 Lark's controls.

Works fine. That compatibility across 44 years tells me that there is no excuse for defects with a design they've been playin with for many decades. Somebody dropped the ball.

John, it appears that my remote wasn't involved, but it also wasn't even listed on the paperwork that I received.

04-J-Z is the code. The last digit could have been a 2. It was hard to tell. The last digit doesn't fit any of the profiles listed. Can you dicipher OMC speak here please?

04-J-Z would be correct (last digit's not a "2").

04 = day of month
J = month (A = Jan, B = Feb etc., so J = Oct)
Z = year (1A = 2001, 1B = 2002 etc., so going backwards, Z = 2000, Y would be 1999 etc.)

-John

My dealer says he doesn't know about the recall, but will take a look. I feel I could "take a look". What am I looking for? Thanks

...dealer says he doesn't know about the recall...
Geez... Guys like this dealer are what give the marine industry a bad name...

A notification letter and a warranty bulletin (2003-03W) were sent out in October. I don't understand how someone doesn't know about it almost 4 months later. The bulletin and letter can be downloaded from the dealer-only web site (called DealerPort). I recommend getting back with your dealer and clueing him in. As a safety and warranty issue, a dealer technician needs to inspect the box, because depending on the results of his inspection certain parts will need to be ordered to ensure it gets repaired correctly.

Date code is 02 I B1. Sept. 2, 2002 build date.
The date code you provided in an earlier post, is one of the effected units.

You may want to speak with someone "in authority" at your dealership, or if you were speaking with someone "in authority", maybe you should try to locate a dealer who knows what's going on.

The customer service folks at Bombardier can help you locate another dealer if necessary - Their number is 847-689-7090.

Good Luck,
-John

Thanks John. I talked to the owner. I guess I'll let him "look". He is getting some new Seaswirls in with Johnson 140's, so I hope his techs will get a little training from Bomb.
