Bondo, I need your help (or reassurance) Buddy before I venture out (when the rain stops)

79 Formula, twin 350s, Pre-Alphas, "old-style" original 79 shift plates (i.e., original 79s)

I've been having a hard time shifting this season so I adjusted my shift cables per this:

http://www.mercstuff.com/images/shiftcable.jpg

I'm a bit freaked out because the adjustments turned out to be significant. I found the cables with the barrel almost to the end of the threaded shaft (as far away from the end of the cable that mounts on the stud as possible). I also found the stud to be at the end of the slot (as far away from the transom as possible)

After adjustment the barrel is say 1" closer to the end than it was and the stud moved 3/4s up the slot. This was true for both engines.

Does that sound "too radical" to you?

Is there a way to check proper operation before I put her back in the water? I made sure the props locked when put in gear in both directions. No play at all. Anything else I can check? What's the worst that could happen if I have somehow screwed this up?

My engines idle about 700. My interrupters are not hooked up. Think I should hook them up? I was thinking of hooking up two manual momentary switches at the helm and doing it manually. Bad idea?

Thanks in advance! I have a very narrow channel at the ramp and any shifting problem could lead to a real disaster.

BTW - the reason for thinking about the manual switches is 1) They gave me nothing but problems (stalls) before the rebuild and 2) during the rebuild one of the swicthes got smashed to bits. 3) I was assured that my engines idle so low that there was no need for them (Marine performance mechanic that did the R&R of the engines.

Hello Ralph my Friend.................
(Still Loving my New Dell..... )

That's the Same Exact page I use to adjust My cable......... Having a Helper is Essential.....
Does that sound "too radical" to you?
Ayah,
It does seem a bit Extreme.......
You've Already checked it on the trailer.....
If the Launch is a little Tight, Try popping it In,+ Out of the gears, Before you release the Bow-Eye.....
That's about the Only, Last Test.......
My engines idle about 700. My interrupters are not hooked up. Think I should hook them up? I was thinking of hooking up two manual momentary switches at the helm and doing it manually. This Really Concerns me...........
I'm not buying Any of this...........
A Properly adjusted cut-out Switch is the Only Way to Go..........
Seeing that you had Issues with the interrupters Before,
And,
You're running Without them Now........
I Think you've Stretched the Cables.........
Your Cables were Bad, Before the rebuild...... Not the Switches........
And,
Now, You're making them Worse.......
There's No Such Thing,
As Idling Low Enough ...........
Your Mechanic Needs his Butt Kicked.........
After you Kick him Good, Book your boat in for the Cable Replacement........ Soon.....
Then,
Get your remaining switch Installed,+ Wired Properly........
I'll have a Look in the Wellhouse + See if I've got another 1 laying around........
What's the worst that could happen if I have somehow screwed this up?
You Could end up with 1 gear,+ not the Other........
Or,
Shifting from the "Engine Room"......
Or,
...............................

"Bad idea?"
Ayuh.......................... ;)

BTW, You should consider replacing All the Rubber Parts,While the Cables are being done............

The cables are all brand new - probably have 50 hours on them. They move easily. Think they could have stretched that quickly? I'm thinking they were never adjusted properly to begin with. I mean, how often is a new install adjusted at the extremes to begin with? Do they stretch that easily/quickly?

Looks like I'll start playing with the interrupters tomorrow.... I can do the port engine at least.

Thanks for the help!

I'll buy That......
Sounds like a Coffee Break, or Quitting Time might have gotten in the way of the Install.........
That would be AWESOME! I haven't been able to find one. If you find one, just email me.

The whole switch case is smashed exposing the internal contacts and the arm is missing. It looks like something fell on it. I'm not sure when it happened. I pulled that engine and would remember if it happened then. It may have happened while sitting on the shop floor waiting for tin to be swapped from the old engines to new. I guess it could have also happened when the engines were being installed.

Bondo,

P/N on these is: 715G1703 Maker looks like "MIOMLY"

Dimensions are: 2" long X 3/4" thick X 1" wide (at wide end) Length of arm is about 1.5" outside the case or, about 2.5" when depressed and measured from roller to end of case.

It has three terminals on the case opposite the arm: Common, Normally open, Normally closed

Re: Bondo - I'm a little freaked! Need your advice

Bondo,

I think the previous owner switched them to some aftermarket stuff! I think that is why I had a problem. Even though they fit, they probably won't adjust right... Mind if I try it? I talked to an old parts guy today and he said McGill is the maker not "Highly" like I have. If so, email me and I'll give you my address. And thanks a bunch for your help!
