i have a 1986 bonito CC 16 foot with 1980 evinrude 50 hp 2cylinder. prop is 12.5 diam X 13" pitch. i am having a h$#L of a time with cavitation, or ventalation, whatever its called when the prop looses bite in the water and starts spinning faster and revs the enigine. i wanna know if anybody else has a setup similar to this and what there running results are. i added a whale tale but it still cavitates...ventilates.. whatever... i dont know what its called

Hmmm, heavy boat, small engine, small diameter prop. Yep, thats gonna give you trouble. Maybe try a lower pitch prop, if your rpm can handle it.

no offense or anything , roscoe, but what were you drinking that night...
heavy boat
umm it only weighs 650 lbs...
small engine
thats what all the new 16 foot boats are coming with from factory.. key west... prolines..key largo... a whole lot offer 16 foot boats with 50hp motors.... why should min e be anything different... and the prob has since been solved.. the pitch was too small already... i needed to change from 13 to 15... which, by the way, was AGAINST what you recomended... but thats all good, at least you were kind enough to write back.. no body else did.... gee thansk guys

Check your cavitation plate with the motor trimmed down/horizontal to the ground. If it sits more than a couple inches above the bottom of the hull then you have a problem that, to my knowledge, can only be remedied by switching to a longer shaft motor or as a last resort transom modification. My guess is that you have a 20"/ short shaft, and need a 25" long shaft. My Dad has a 17 foot Sea Nymph with a 60 Mercury and the motor sits about 2-3" above the bottom and it cavitates pretty bad in any kind of chop and also slides out in sharp turns. Hope this helps.

for starters, how high is your motor mounted? Do you have the motor mounted on the boat on the lowest setting? the motor should have 3 or 4 sets of bolt holes.and if it is still doing it, drop the motor one notch lower on the the bolt holes. if it is at the lowest bolt holes already. Then your option is to get a jackplate. and at least with a jackplate you can adjust the height on the water. just loosen a few bolts and crank it down a little.these are your only options. the cavitation is being caused from the motor too high. not when it is set correctly you should be able to run it wide open and trimmed up without it cavitating. and when you go around a bend in the river it will cavitiate just a little trimmed all the way up. good luck and i am going to link a great jackplate company just for your information . it may help. good luck and have great day.!!

http://www.cook-mfg.com/

1998 Promaster 19 Foot Center Console Bay Boat
BOAT = Bust Out Another Thousand
Reeltime123@cox.net
Promaster Website at:
http://community.webshots.com/user/reeltime123
