looking @ getting a boat for Lake Erie & we are looking at the Montauk 170 & the Edgewater 170cc.....yes, the boats are very similar & similar price wise too....the Edgewater is maybe 5-7% cheaper.

Which of the 2 do you recommend & why?

I think I would lean toward the Edgewater, only because Bob Dougherty designed it. Bob designed most of the classic Boston Whalers.

wouldn't the boston whaler have better residual value b/c it is a "boston whaler"...plus, it's the 50th anniversary edition, which a lot of BW nuts out there many really want in the future? possibly?

Either is certainly going to be a truly great boat, and hold value well.

I am a many-time Boston Whaler owner (8) and loved them all, but loved the Dougherty boats best. I would expect Bob to produce a boat comparable in quality to the classic Whalers. I just think they were better boats back then, before they became a Brunswick product.

I remember this old vs new debate in the 70's. This Dougherty boats issue is new to me. I guess this is why iboats is cool.

We ended up getting the Boston Whaler Montauk 170, fully loaded w/ all options including a top of the line Garmin GPS for $25.9k + tax........ it's a 2008 50th anniversary edition w/ red graphics (they had one w/ navy too). The Edgewater dealer had no new boats & 1 used 170cc & it had no trailer & they were asking $22.9k...so after we would've bought a trailer, the price diff. would've been minimal.. so decided to go new. The one thing I DID NOT like about the Montauk was the exposed gas tanks...oh well, not a huge deal i guess.

hopefully the boat can handle Lake Erie's (sometimes) rough waters.

I think going with the Whaler was a good idea. I love the old Whalers too, and maybe the new Edgewater's could have been designed similarly, but like you suggested the Whaler will hold its value much better. You look at used boats, and you'll find 1970's Boston Whalers for $6-8000. I can't think of any other 1970's small boats that hold their value like that.

That Boston Whaler can handle much more than the human occupants inside can.

You bought a boat and didn't sea trail it first?

Something about checking the depth of the water before leaping off the cliff comes to mind.

Thank you JB.

I did not know who designed it, but it is extremely practical, versatile and easy to work on. Dougherty did do a good job on it.

she is a sweet boat good luck with her and don`t mock the portable tanks , you`ll go though fresh gas alot sooner and with the fuel problems today you can always clean the tank out if needed I have a 17 outrage and the only thing i do not like is she has in hull tank and the only avantage is fuel capacity. <*))-}} P>S show a picture of her:)
