Hsport...

I wonder if your brother thinks Whalers are very over priced?

I think if you surveyed Boston Whaler owners you'd fine most think the boats are worth every penny and then some. I know I do. :D

As for Gradys... I've always liked them. No doubt about it, they're one of best boats out there. :)

Both of these makes represent the "first tier" of boats in current production. Which one you choose depends on the layout fits best. Both makes use fiberglass encapsulated marine plywood for stringers and transom.. really no diff. Both will "rot" if you let water get to the wood in the transom, via leaky thru hulls or such. Grady claims to have more closed cell foam per boat length than any mfg. since they have been building boats.. 1950's approx. I own a grady but think makes are generally equal. I do think all grady's no watter what year are the top of thier respective class.
just my .02

Re: Boston Whaler vs. Grady White

I've been boating for only the last 25 years or so. I had my heart set on the Grady 204C walk around cuddy. I could never afford the money that they demanded. I ended up going thru a fleet of boats before I found "my sweetheart".

What is the best for you may change as you or boating needs change. Now I own a 1983 17' BW Mntk and it is everything I need/want now. When I was younger I wanted the cuddy and now I do not have a need for it. Wouldn't trade my Whaler for two Gradys!!!!!

I really don't think you'll go wrong with either choice, you have cut thru to the chase and have the "cream of the crop" your asking people to choose from.

I'm still going with the Whaler (Sorry Grady)!!!!

Having owned both, they are both excellent. I bought my present boat because I wanted a full transom in a walk around style boat.I have two small children and find this to be more family freindly. As for quality fit and finish, I think you cannot go wrong with either boat.

Offshire 22

I don't know why but we seem to lose quite a few grady's (Roll Over) a year at oregon and hateras inlet. Is it the high profile or belief of the captains that they are indestructable. I have fished on quite a few of these but never when things get Sh---y so this has always been a question in the back of my mind. I fish / run a custom built boat hand made to order hull and was involved with every stage of her lay up so no production boat impresses me from the get go even though the production methods are very proven and prettier finishing. With all that said and in a lower tier production model boat I vote Grady.

Re: Boston Whaler vs. Grady White

In side by side comparisons I give the edge to BW in fit, finish, QC and snob appeal. I didn't get factory laminate schedules to compare structure so that part is undecided but both are proven enough to know they don't break easily. I don't like the BW designs so GW wins BIG in that department. Overall I've have to give the edge to BW for overall quality but would buy a GW. I can't handle the blunt wave pounding, teeth jaring, bone rattling bow that BWs have. They are slowly evolving to a more conventional hull shape but it is still years from being being "user friendly" as the GW.

I know for a fact that all Grady's are NOT made from closed cell foam. I just tore the floor out of a 70's 18 foot Grady walk through with the Foam soaked clean through so bad the boat could hardly plane. I had to tear it all out and start with new foam.

Give me a Mako over either of them any day :)
