I read over the "Outboard wont start" sticky but I'm looking for additional guidance for troubleshooting the fuel system, as that's where I think the symptoms bring me.
I adopted the boat from a P.O. who stated it was in perfect running order a year ago- it has since sat indoors and not been run nor winterized I believe - but it was in a climate controlled area. Neither of the outboards will run. Both will crank. Both have spark because both run, albeit rough, with a little shot of starting spray. Both have new spark plugs all the way around.
The fuel is old, how old I don't know and neither does the P.O. In order to rule out bad fuel, I attempted to run a single engine with fresh fuel directly from a 5 gal can but I was unsuccessful (I had however previously attempted to start the engine with old fuel- possibly some was still left in the carb bowls?) I primed the pump ball until it was hard and observed the good fuel passing past the fuel pump and past the fuel filter, so I believe the pump is good and the filter is not obstructed but it still won't start. Could there be more bad fuel in the lines and I just didn't get to the good fuel yet?
So, that's where I left it. Tomorrow I intend to tackle it again and would like to make a list of things/areas to check. Could anyone suggest some ideas? What ever it is, its affecting both engines so its got to be fuel related.
I plan on draining each carb fuel bowl and pumping in fresh fuel to attempt another start up
I plan on looking down the throat of each carb in order to observe a good, unobstructed spray of fuel from the jets
The troubleshooting section in the manual mentions checking the fuel pump pressure, but I don't have the equipment for that unfortunately. All the other troubleshooting "possible causes" I think have been ruled out via the artificial fuel supply and the fact that it runs on starter fluid.
What else?
Thanks all
