Looking at a 1994 20 ft Maxum in overall above average condition. I notice bottom of the hull has been painted gray. Seller states they painted it because 1) They repaired some dings/scraps with 3M 5200 and let it cure properly then they painted the bottom of the hull. 2)The water/channel they go through to get to and from the big lake is real dirty water so the paint protects the hull bottom/gel coat underneath. It's a fresh water boat in Illinois formerly from Indiana. Does this make sense? I've never painted the bottom/hull of any of my boats.

Anti fouling paint is not uncommon, especially in salt water and dirty water. The concern I have is using 5200 for dings and scrapes. Odds are they didn't use the correct paint either.

If they used 5200 to repair scratches in a hull, who knows what other “short cuts” they’ve taken

YA, openly admitting you have used caulk to do body work is probably not a good start.

If they will tell you that up front what other stuff have they done they won't tell you about, I would really look it over pretty close.
