Bottom paint, before or after?

Just about to switch engine on my boat, should I put the bottom paint before or after I put the engine on ? The ex owner of my boat, put the bottom paint around the engine mount but not under it, I will also replace my drain plug for my bilge, should I install it directly on the gelcoat or on the bottom paint ?

Standard bottom is usually kept a good inch AWAY from the motor as it is BAD for aluminum

Ha thanks, that's good to know. How about brass ? (bilge drain plug)
